Ok, so it's not really Wednesday anywhere at this point, but yesterday was one of those rapid one-day, flight filled trips to a job site that consumed the day, and I didn't even technically return on Wednesday thanks to delays. Anyway, this week is such a strange collisions of my interests, that I couldn't not say something....there has been another sandcrawler building sighting.
So if you don't know what I'm talking about, a few years ago Lucasfilm Singapore planned what looks very much like a high tech sandcrawler for its building, at least when seen from certain angles. You can see some pictures here and here. With the Disney purchase, I have no idea as to the building's fate, and haven't tracked anything down about its current status.
This week, the Minnesota Vikings released renderings of its covered stadium to replace the Metrodome. I didn't pick up on this from the video and angles I had seen, but again, from certain points of view (as they say), it resembles a sandcrawler in profile. Sorry, you can't blame (or congratulate, depending) that on me. Though I continue to work on stadiums and arenas, as I have for many years, a different firm won that project (though my company did pursue it heavily - actually two of the companies I worked for pursued it for years). So, you won't find me posting any comments about the structure for a variety of reasons, but it is the sort of building type I'm very familiar with. So, coincidence that Minneapolis based Fantasy Flight Games gets the Star Wars license, and then this shows up in town? Hmm..... Anyway, this is early days in the design process, so we'll see how it turns out in the long run. These sorts of buildings have a way of evolving greatly over time.
