I have been long remiss in updating this blog. The days really run together. Like many, I’ve been working from home for an extended period of time, not that that seems to help in this instance. I didn’t even note the various Genesys RPG and related Gen Con news, of which there was some. I’ll blame part of it on often running an online game session on Wednesday nights, but that’s not really an excuse either. So, on with it.
Where to begin? The Mandalorian is great and they just released the trailer for the next season, and that looks equally good. The music is fantastic, but surprisingly pricey if you want every episode.
The Clone Wars episodes were extremely well done. I look forward to whatever is next on that front.
Gen Con Online was fun, though different of course. I ran a RPG session each day, either Star Wars or Genesys Android, and I had players from as far away as Wales and Canada. By Sunday I was tired enough for it to feel something like a four day convention. Running games online is more tiring than I expected, though I’ve run some games online over the past few months. I used Roll20 along with the API that allows the use of the customized character sheets for Star Wars and Genesys. The setup time for online games is a bit tiring to do, like you have to do a lot of things twice by the time you create characters and content, and then have to copy them into the system. Roll20 worked reasonably well, except that in 3 of the 4 games I had fall back on Discord for audio because the built in chat system got caught in this weird problem where not everyone could hear each other.
I also sat in on a number of seminars, including the traditional FFG Inflight Report, which had some technical difficulties. It is still available on YouTube, though most of the news is out now, I’m sure. More pertinent to my own freelance future and RPGs were the Edge Studio announcements the next day, featuring former FFG RPG lead Sam Gregor-Stewart giving the first real update since Edge was handed the RPG reins by Asmodee. The YouTube recording is below, but basically, there is more Genesys Android coming, a heavy hint that something Terrinoth related to the new Descent release is in the works, and the Genesys Foundry will continue (with some legal tweaks with the switch to Edge Studios). No release schedule was given, and no Star Wars RPG announcements at this time.
Related to all that is that KeyForge Secrets of the Crucible was released earlier, which I worked on. There are still a couple of Legend of the 5 Rings RPG to come from FFG directly that were in the works. I don’t work on that game line.
And just this past week, a few old friends made an announcement that D6 fans may like to hear about. Eric Trautmann with Adamant Entertainment got several former WEG staff and freelancers together to create a series of adventures called Star System: Every Star a Destination, using an Open D6 (D6 Space) variation they are calling D6 Plus. The look, feel, art style, and format is definitely in the old WEG style.
Bill Smith (Line Editor, The Star Wars Roleplaying Game.)
Peter Schweighofer (Editor, The Star Wars Adventure Journal.)
Timothy S. O'Brien (Pirates & Privateers.)
Drew Campbell (Cynabar's Fantastic Technology: Droids.)
Gareth-Michael Skarka (D6 Space: Ships.)
Michael Kogge (Star Wars Adventure Journal.)
Wayne Humfleet (Heroes & Rogues.)
It is an impressive list. The book is available on DriveThruRPG in PDF and print on demand, which I picked up and received unexpectedly quickly.
