Sad Star Wars news today. LucasArts is officially closed, all current projects cancelled. Disney says they'll be licensing Star Wars and other IPs out to other game studios. No matter what you may think of LucasArts efforts over the years, they'll always be one of the iconic video game companies in history, thanks to fun and sometimes groundbreaking games.

This past week saw more details on the Clone Wars cancellation and rumors as to what might come next. I also ran across a few things I'd forgotten about online....

It has been quite a week for Star Wars. Judging by the surge on this site on Monday, it appears more than a few readers checked in to see if I had anything to say about the cancellation of The Clone Wars. On top of that, there are some other announcements to discuss...

So, the past week or two have had a few Star Wars mysteries solved. Granted, three weren't ones I was aware of, and the one I wondered about actually wasn't totally solved, just given a different direction...

As predicted, the last week has indeed resembled Hoth around here, with two major winter storms in 7 days dumping about 16 total inches in my driveway...and around town. That would be 8-9" the first round, 5+" yesterday and about 1-2" this morning. The last major storm I had a bit of fun with some Star Wars Minis in the backyard a bit over two years ago. You can see it here. Frankly, I'm not sure what it says about the state of things, when I could've used that exact same post, word for word today and it would be just as relevant...well, except for that Sam Witwer comment....but if it had been a few weeks ago... Anyway, I won't leave it at that. Here's an array of recent Star Wars things to keep the snowbound amused.

According to the forecast, the weather should turn extremely Hoth-like around here in the next 12-24 hours. So obviously, that means its time to answer a couple of reader questions about Edge of the Empire RPG Beta. The Obligation and related XP discussion from a few weeks ago prompted a few questions. One answer you can find in the comments section, the others I'll take on here. Remember, my answers are not official, and I don't intend to do this more than occasionally.

As I mentioned last week, I was a guest once again on this week's Order 66 podcast, specifically to talk about the Obligation mechanic in the Edge of the Empire RPG Beta. I helped develop the mechanic and wrote the GM advice in EotE. I had a few thoughts after the show I wanted to follow up on.

There were several updates from Fantasy Flight Games this past week or so regarding the Star Wars game line. I liked the blog title enough that I might reuse it from time to time (though putting a number in the title almost guarantees I'll drop it before using it a second time. Planning, right?). On top of that, I'll be making another Order 66 podcast appearance on Sunday evening, 8:30pm, justin.tv.

Two topics of interest this week that don't exactly fit together. The first is the 100th Episode of The Clone Wars, the second is the conversion of the Order 66 podcast from Saga Edition to Edge of the Empire. Read on for comments on both...with a spoiler alert on the 100th Episode musings. After the break, the post will proceed with the podcast info, then a large break for those who don't want to accidentally read a spoiler or two on the Clone Wars.

It's 2013! Time to get this year's first Star Wars Wednesday off to a great start...three days late. Actually, technically four days, given this will go up after midnight Friday. As it happens, I'm actually glad I was...delayed a bit. Tuesday was spent recovering from New Year's Eve. Wednesday I got distracted assembling new furniture and rearranging the living room, and slowed further while relocating our over complicated, over wired, TV/surround sound/stereo setup. Thursday turned out to be a bit more on track - I caught up on the Clone Wars, while assembling another furniture piece (flatpacks are fun! Right?). With the 100th episode broadcasting this Saturday (OK - LATER THIS MORNING), I wanted to be back on track.

Well, 2012 was an exceptionally interesting and unexpected year for Star Wars and Star Wars gaming. The design and release of the new Star Wars RPG from FFG. Lucasfilm going to Disney. Celebration VI. New movies on the way, and Clone Wars moving right along. I could go on, but most fans know it, and there are far better sources out there.
Instead, this end of the year grab bag blog post is going to feature links to Star Wars RPG related sites - new, old and still active.
Star Wars Wednesday - SWEotE Beginner Game Release
This past week marked the first true, final product release for the new Star Wars RPG from Fantasy Flight Games, the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game. It is a true beginners game, with step by step instructions for brand new RPG players, which work just fine for veterans as well. It has a streamlined version of the Edge of the Empire RPG rules which are technically still in Beta, until its anticipated release in 2013. This won't be a review of the product, but I'll throw out a few comments and a few helpful links for those who want to check it out.

Order 66, the first podcast dedicated to the Star Wars RPG, ended their Saga Edition exclusivity this past week. They're transitioning over to Edge of the Empire, after toying with the idea of running two separate podcasts. Not surprisingly, they decided the didn't have time for that.

I ran 3 sessions of the Star Wars Edge of the Empire Beta at KC Game Fair. It was my own scenario called Payoff. The main plot was simple - the PCs owed two different crime lords a lot of credits. They get the opportunity to make enough to pay one, but not both, back.

Last weekend was KC Game Fair, the local Kansas City gaming convention I help organize via the Roleplayers Guild of Kansas City, Ltd. We had a good turnout, and everyone seemed to have a good time. This year, I ran three rounds of the Star Wars Edge of the Empire Beta RPG, and two rounds of X-Wing Miniatures, using the Death Star Trench Run scenario by Dagobah Dave. I'll look at the RPG next week. This week, it's all X-wing.
